While the statistics for massage professionals look bleak with these statistics reported by ABMP at www.massagetherapy.com

Total earnings by massage therapists, including their earnings from other employment, were $32,506 (2005 ABMP Member Survey).

First-year practice average income was $9,589, reflecting the challenges of establishing a professional-service practice (2005 ABMP Member Survey).

65.6 percent wish they had more clients — 21.2 percent indicated that (more clients) was the one change they would most like to make to their practice.

# Nearly half of the respondents (51 percent) report supplementing their income with another job, a job at which they spend an average of 25 hours per week. The top five second occupations include: office/secretary/clerks; massage instructor; medical, including nurses; teacher/education; and sales/retail.

The thing is that it can be a different way. Part of the problem I think is that massage schools are telling students to do things like undercharge for their services, take low paying jobs and don't quit your day job thereby creating the thought that it is difficult to start a massage practice. If you think it is difficult to start a practice - it will be. If you think it will be easy to start a practice- it will be.

Here are some stories of successful massage businesses that I am collecting. Please add your own too!
