Money issues are always a challenge when thinking about going to massage school and starting a massage business.

Massage School can cost between $10,000 and I have heard as much as $31,000 (which is really ridiculous). Compared to going to a 4 year school or a trade school, the cost of going to massage school is really minimal. The thing is that most massage therapists don't prepare financially to go to massage school and go in needing financial assistance. Massage schools will even encourage people to go more into debt to pay for massage school. While getting grants, scholarships and loans or even putting it all on a credit card may be necessary, it will be telling of what your beliefs are about money which is the main issue.

If you don't have the money to go to massage school, think about what that means. Why do you not have the money you need to do what you love? What must you believe about yourself to be so in debt? Starting out in massage school with this issue, is a sign that starting or building a massage practice may be a challenge for you. What is happening with your money is very telling of what is happening inside of you.

Part of the problem is that massage schools do not teach boundaries and self care enough as they don't really have the time to. They often don't have a very good business and ethics class. So whether you are just looking into going to massage school and looking for funding or trying to start your massage practice, it will be helpful to work out your money issues during the process.

Finding a good financial counselor who can help you take a look at the emotional issues surrounding your money issues can also help. The thing about money is that we project all of our unmet needs into having or not having money.

Reading books by Suze Orman, Mikelann Valterra and others can help you to start becoming aware of the deeper issues behind your money problems.

Going to massage school may help you in becoming more aware. If you do decide to go even though you can't really afford it, you will have to work twice as hard to make it work. You will have to do everything you can to build a business whether it is working for free or offering discounts or charging double what the local rates are for massage. It may mean eating macaroni and cheese for a few years but it can be done if you really work at becoming more aware of your issues with money.
