Most massage schools, websites about careers and career books make careers in massage out to be the new upcoming profession.  The thing that they fail to tell you is that most massage jobs start at $12-$15 an hour working  long hours, weekends and evenings.  In truth most massage therapists start their own massage business.  While massage therapists can charge on average $60 an hour - what you make is actually the amount you have after your expenses of rent and other costs of doing business.

Massage school only teaches you how to do massage.  It doesn't teach you how to be a massage therapist just like going to law school doesn't make you a lawyer.

To be a successful massage therapist you must have an understanding of the reasons why you want to become a massage therapist - what drives you? what about massage are you passionate about?

Is it helping others?  Engaging in more meaningful work?  Setting your own schedule and having more freedom working for yourself?

No one else on the web or in any book or massage school is talking about the struggles that most massage therapists have in creating a practice or finding a job in massage.  Most massage therapists also only work part time in the profession because of the physical challenges as well as the challenge of making money and having the clients that you need to be successful.

Each year about 50,000 massage therapist leave the profession for various reasons with about 60,000 new therapist joining the massage profession each year.  The number of massage therapists continues to rise but how many of them are successful?  We don't really know.  What I do know is that what makes for a successful massage therapist has little to do with what massage school you choose or what you learn in massage school.  It has more to do with how you take care of yourself so that you can be of service to others.

Being of Service is quite different from helping others.  When you help you create a co-dependent relationship.  While there are some people who really do need help, most do not need help.  What they need is something else which usually involves just being allowed to figure out what they need to do for themselves in the first place.  Massage is just a tool for allowing people to feel themselves more and to become more aware of themselves.  It can also help with things like pain, injuries and depression but how it works has nothing really to do with whatever massage technique you do.  It is more about who you are than what you do.  If it were just the technique - there would only be one or two different types of massage rather than over 250 different types of massage.

I am writing this after 20 years of making a living as a massage therapist in Seattle WA.  Through the years I have seen many massage therapists come and go - some that I have even personally recommended going to massage school.  When I first started there were very few jobs and doing massage was more about a lifestyle than making a living.  As more massage therapists have entered the market, it makes massage therapists take their massage business more seriously and see it as a business - not a part of themselves.
