Male vs Female Massage Therapists

In choosing a massage therapist one of the things to consider is the difference between a male vs. female massage therapist. Since the massage profession is predominately female massage therapists, women give most of the massages.

There seems to be many issues attached to this area of choosing a massage therapist. Men seem to prefer women. Women seem to prefer women. Both choices have a variety of reasons and issues around them.

Men may feel intimidated by getting a massage from a male whether it be some slightly homophobic tendencies or they just may prefer to receive the touch of a woman. Women prefer to go to women massage therapists possibly because of previous past issues of abuse or trust with men.

The idea that a woman is more nurturing can't be disputed, but there are also many very nurturing male massage therapists who are also highly skilled at what they do.

The ideas around choosing a male or female massage therapist will tell you what issues you may need to heal in yourself and choosing the one that brings up the most intense feelings for you may help in addressing the deeper issues that are associated with making such a choice.

In an ideal world it would be nice if people were able to choose a massage therapist based on what they need at any given moment regardless of the sex of the massage therapist. But since we don't live in such a place, choose what you feel the most comfortable with.

There are many reasons why you may want to choose a male massage therapist. Men can be nurturing but they also have a distinct analytical side and approach to doing massage. Women also have a general tendency to be more 'chatty' in my view but that doesn't mean there aren't men who do that too.

Men may also seem to be stronger but so that they would be able to give a deeper tissue massage but there are many women who are just as qualified in that arena. For years as a massage therapist, I went to mainly women for my own massage, but recently have found something different by getting massage from men (and that is nothing sexual at all in any way or manner.)

Getting a massage from a male or female can be an equally effective and appealing choice. I recommend that you try both at sometime in your life. If you don't trust men, wait until you do feel more comfortable and get a recommendation from a friend or co-worker. It can provide a valuable healing experience for both sexes.
