Legally when can I start giving massages?

by Heidi
(Wisconsin)

I am currently enrolled in a program for massage therapy. I am wondering if I can legally give massages to people before I finish school and get my certification? I have friends and family that are interested in me giving them massages. Is it legally o.k for me to do this? Can I be held accountable if anything goes wrong?

Answer:
You should have student liability insurance. You can't do much harm in the first place. You can't charge for a massage until you are licensed. You can do massage for free anytime, anywhere. You should already be practicing on other students at school. The more massages you do the better off you will be.

I agree with Julie's comments. I will add that your instructors/school should be familiar with the laws in your jurisdiction and therefore guide you with the appropriate procedures on timing when to start what/when.
