Legal aspects of practicing massage

by Dorcas Tsakiridis
(Chicago, Illinois )

What should an MT look out for in splitting costs, IC situations, renting space, working with other practitioners (esp. chiropractors), etc.?
There are legal considerations & we don't want to be illegal or cheat others.

You need to consult an attorney on this one to determine what is legal and what is not for your unique situation.

You can also check your state laws as some state specifically what is allowed like NY State does not allow fee splitting.

In most cases it isn't that we are cheating anyone it is that massage therapists are being cheated out of benefits and having to pay self employment taxes in many cases where they should be employees.
