The Power of Healing Touch

The Power of Healing Touch is really what the massage profession is about. The one basic element in all types of massage is touch. No matter what type of technique you have learned, what really matters is the intention of your touch. A client won't know the difference between a cross-fiber friction or a sacral alignment move. What they feel is our touch. We use the Power of Healing Touch to provide clients with a space to allow them to get in touch with their bodies. Our bodies are the messengers. The pain, tension and feelings that they bring us are a sign that something is out of balance.

What is their tension and pain telling them?

What message is their body sending them?

Being able to be there with a client and support them in the process of interpreting the message is where the healing occurs. Through touch, we assist others in learning to feel and decipher the message.

Often people are very out of touch with this part of themselves. It starts happening at an early age. Our fast paced society challenges us to stay present and stay in tune with ourselves. We become numb and unaware of tension or tightness in our bodies.

Healing Touch in the form of skilled massage does just that- gets people back in their bodies, creates a connection with their inner selves and provides a safe place for people to be able to feel. Our whole lives are run by our feelings. When we stop feeling we end up being defensive or stuck. Our bodies reflect this by building Body Armor. Our muscles tighten and we stop breathing when we are faced with stress.

Healing Touch

Elliot Green in his book "Psychology of the Body" defines armoring as "chronic patterns of involuntary tension that dampen or block emotional expression, alter perception of both the outer world and the inner psychological world, diminish or eliminate kinesthetic awareness and other sensations, and restrict range of motion and movement. Simply put, armor is a defense against affect that is manifested in the entire body." Armoring is created when we are under stress. Stress can be chemical such as air pollution and pesticides, emotional such as repressing or suppressing feelings, physical such as trauma of injuries, and spiritual. Our bodies are really just one protective mechanism.

Healing Touch is the way through armoring and resistance. When we touch others in a way that is supporting and nurturing they can become more aware of how they are holding tension in their body. You can't change anything until you become aware of what it is that needs changing.

It isn't really any one technique that can heal trauma such as a muscle strain or tear. Clients don't have any perception of what cross fiber friction and the theories behind using that technique for healing. They just know what it is like to be able to feel that part of their body and get in touch with the meaning behind the pain.

Touch is what does that. Touch with Intent.

One of my first books that I bought in this profession is Ashley Montagu's "Touching : The Human Significance of the Skin" Even though it was written in 1971, it is a milestone in the massage profession. There have been many studies that reveal even further the significance of touch. There is now a Touch Research Institute that is dedicated to researching this instrument we use as a massage therapist.

So, Touch has many uses and applications. It is essentially what heals. When we massage, we are touching. As a massage professional, touch will also facilitate your healing process and challenge you in many ways. Touch is just one of many tools we can use to connect with our inner source, our true self, our higher being or whatever term you use to describe your inner self.

With this responsibility of touching others in a way that changes or opens up awareness comes with it the "Ethics of Touch" which should be at the center of all massage school training and in creating a successful practice. Learning to act in an ethical way is really about understanding relationships. What we do as massage therapists is provide a space for people to "Be" and "Feel" themselves more which is one of the greatest gifts of the universe. table border="0" width="90%" id="table1" style="border-collapse: collapse" bordercolor="#000080">
