These are some of the most Frequently asked questions that I get from readers through this website. You can ask your own questions and also see what others are asking and also see the answers from me and other therapists in the comments section.
How much money can you make as a massage therapist?
The first thing people want to know about is how much money you can make as a
massage therapist. The truth is that there are no accurate statistics and the ones that we do have from our professional associations do not look great. I talk about the statistics in some of the areas on this website like the massage therapy job pages and an even more extensive evaluation of this in my Ebook "The Massage Therapy Career Guide - the Truth about becoming a massage therapist.
The thing is that you can make as much money as you think and believe you
can.
And if you have heard that massage therapists can make $60-$80 an hour - think
again! This is what is charged to a client. It is not what you
actually make. You can read more in my Ebook or read some more readers
questions about this topic.

Can a Male make a good living as a massage therapist?
The majority in the massage profession are women. Many men feel intimidated by this and wonder if they will be successful as a male in a female dominated profession. Since massage is usually first thought of as a nurturing profession, men wonder where that will leave them.
They are also faced with many women preferring to get massage from women for safety and personal issues. Men also prefer getting massage from women due to their preconceived notions about getting massaged by a man.
There are many men in the massage profession who are very successful.
Some of the greats who have made a name for themselves by developing massage
techniques and writing books are Leon Chaitow, Milton Trager, Paul St.
John, Joseph Heller, Ben Benjamin to name just a few.

I am in high school and think I want to go to massage school...what do I need to know or do?
I seem to be getting a number of high school students looking into careers in massage. If someone has told you you have good hands and should be a massage therapist- there is much more to being a massage therapist than having good hands. You will be massaging people with their clothes off (under sheets) and with many physical, mental and emotional issues. A certain level of maturity is required. The average age of massage therapists is currently 45. Most go to massage school after pursuing other careers.
While there are no other requirements to get into massage school other than a high school diploma and you don't have to know math, you will be taking basic college level anatomy and physiology. You will also need a background in business and customer service as most massage therapists build their own business. Most jobs are low paying and are entry level positions.
While there are many young adults going into massage and they are successful - it is not just about having good hands and making a high hourly wage.
