A Mans Field??

by George
(Bremerton, WA)

what is the likely hood of a man succeeding as a LMT. Isn't it a predominately a career for woman?

Answer:
This question has been asked many times.

Most massage therapists are women. That does not mean that men can not be successful in massage. It just means that they have to deal with the challenge of being a male in a predominately female world which is hard for many male egos to handle.

More on male advantages.
by: Hans Albert Quistorff LMP

I do not intend to put one gender up and the other down. I am currently mentoring both male and female practitioners.
The male advantage is that they may be very nurturing but they are not biologically and emotionally required to devote as much of their life energy to their progeny. Therefor women are more frequently forced out of loop that engenders progress until there family matures.
Of course men can get distracted with their toys and not progress also.
It took the doctor a long time to understand that it took two women working part time to fill the position I did despite my poor health.
I understand I spent 5 years as a house husband while my wife built up her dental lab only to lose it due to disabling injury. Then she was there while I develop my career change at 55.

Life of A Male Massage Therapist
by: Sean

Yes, it can be tough, but it's doable. However, to succeed, you'll need a different toolbox for marketing your practice and services.

Most massage marketing is taught from a female perspective. Most of it is good--for female massage therapists. You'll need to market with a completely different plan.

Male massage therapists typically try to compete at the same playing field as female therapists. This is an equation for failure, as you will soon find you have far more deficits using a female model than any female therapist.

This is known as a "bottom -up" approach, and you will soon fail.

Instead, using a "top-down" approach requires you to capitalize on the assets you already have as a male therapist. Your marketing model needs to follow this approach.

Sharing your experiences as a male therapist is always helpful.
